Meyer Sound Reaches Out at the ICAAP in Melbourne

Meyer in Melbourne's Royal Exhibition Building

A Meyer Sound self-powered loudspeaker system helped to get the message across in word and song to approximately four thousand delegates from the ICAAP (International Conference on AIDS in Asia and the Pacific) this past October. The Royal Exhibition Building in Melbourne, Australia hosted the conference in which a mixture of compelling, sobering speeches and moving and uplifting theatrical acts made for a remarkable evening. Featured speakers included the Governor of Victoria, Sir John Landy, The Premier of Victoria, Steve Bracks and the Federal Health Minister Michael Woolridge.

The challenges facing System Sound of Prahan, Victoria were two-fold. The venue is large and features vaulted ceilings that reach up to thirty meters in height, and a dome that is fifty meters high, creating a highly reverberant space. In addition, the stage is centrally located between the three wings of the building, making even coverage difficult to achieve.

"I knew I would have to be very careful with choice, location and angle of the loudspeakers to maintain intelligibility", said Kelvin Gedye, sound designer for the event. "Fortunately, here at System Sound, I have access to a large inventory of Meyer Sound products including MSL-4s, CQ-1s and UPA-1Ps as well as SIMŽ System II FFT Analyzer."

The main system consisted of six main clusters, each containing a PSW-4 High-Power Flyable Subwoofer over an MSL-4 Horn-Loaded Long-Throw Loudspeakers with a CQ-1 Wide Coverage Main Loudspeaker underneath. Six pairs of UPA-1P Compact Wide Coverage Loudspeakers were used as front fills, five pairs of MSL-4s were placed as delays and two MTS-4 Full-Range Main Loudspeakers were used on either side of the band stage as near fill.

Gedye also included eighteen UPA-1P's as surround sound and five UM-1 Narrow Coverage Stage Monitors. One MSL-2A and two CQ-1s were used to provide fold back for the bands and performers.

"Using Meyer speakers and MAPP Online(tm) (Multipurpose Acoustical Prediction Program), I was able to achieve a result in this challenging venue that clearly exceeded all expectations. The clarity and evenness of coverage, whether it was speech or music, was superlative", concluded Gedye.
