Professional Theatre Technicians Association Inc.
Who are we?
In 2004 the "AUSTECHS" forum was formed to
provide an avenue for information sharing between Theatre
Technicians from around Australia. This came about from a joint
commitment by the VAPAC and NARPACA Tech Committees to participate
actively in the development of the industry. A general meeting
was held in Sydney during ENTECH 2004 and the group was established.
This was further developed during the annual NARPACA Technical
Managers Conference in Townsville in February 2005. The Conference
delegates comprised of NARPACA and VAPAC Members, as well as
individual representatives from NSW, VIC and the industry at large.
As a direct result of this commitment by the VAPAC and NARPACA Tech
Committees, a group of delegates from Sth East QLD were tasked with
establishing a formal identity for the group. Australian
Professional Theatre Technicians Association Inc. is a group of
likeminded individuals, incorporated as an association in
Queensland, under the Associations Incorporation Act 1981.
Theatre Technician – A Definition
The Australian Professional Theatre Technicians
Association recognises the following ‘callings’ as technicians of
the theatre; lighting, sound, flyman, mechanist, rigger, stage
management, wardrobe, wigs, props, production management, scenic
workshops, scenic artists, audiovisual, technical manager, theatre
consultants, makeup, designers, projectionist, stage hand,
automation either actively employed, retired or resting,
The Idea
The aim of the Association is to provide Industry Advocacy and
Development to Professional Theatre Technicians.
At this stage the
association has 4 main pursuits
-
National Standards - Strategies to creation
-
National Training - RTO Accreditation, RPL, Training Programs.
-
Industry Development - Industry and Industry People
Sustainability Projects.
-
Members’ needs - As nominated by members.
How are we going to do it?
1. Being an Incorporated Association gives us legitimacy as an
industry body. This legitimacy will enable us to represent
Technicians and the industry, providing advocacy to all levels of
government in relation to:
Training, Legislation,
Health and Safety
Operational Standards.
Industry Sustainability
2. Developing a nationally accredited training structure.
3.
Industry Development – Research and investigate operational
Sustainability. Future Proofing the Industry - Sustainable
Practices to sustainable futures.
4.
Members needs – We will rely on your input and participation
to move forward.
Why
The only way to be heard is to say something.
Many of voices
make more
noise.
The
best way to improve our industry is through professional
development, your professional development.
A
relevant Australian Standard for Live Theatre will only exist, if
the industry writes it.
A
nationally recognised and accredited trade qualification for
Technical Theatre will only exist if the Industry creates it.
Operational Efficiencies are best achieved by Operations People. No
one else will do it for us.
Meeting Mentality
To minimise staff down
time and maximise the use of that downtime, it was decided to hold
the annual general meeting in Sydney every second year to coincide
with the ENTECH Trade Show and other Venue and Technical Association
Meetings.
Members of the
AUSTECHS network automatically qualify for membership of the
APTTA and are exempt from the one off $30.00 application
administration charge. Simply include you AUSTECHS I.D. in
the Membership No: section of the payment form.
